Pelham Jointed
The Pelham bit is a versatile choice for riders seeking more control than a simple snaffle provides. Designed as a combination of the Weymouth and bradoon, it allows the use of two reins for refined communication.
When used with the top rein, the Pelham functions like a hanging cheek snaffle, applying gentle pressure to the poll and mouth. Engaging the lower rein increases leverage and activates the curb chain, enhancing control through lip and poll pressure. The level of leverage depends on the shank length — longer shanks offer greater effect.
The curb chain should be adjusted so that it engages when the second rein is used, but with enough slack to avoid immediate tension.
A popular bit among experienced riders, the Pelham provides a balance of finesse and control, making it suitable for horses that are strong or sensitive to a standard snaffle.
